2012 Halibut Regulations!

We got some great news today - the IPHC - International Pacific Halibut Commission voted today to endorse and accept the recommendations for new halibut regulations for area 2-C - which is the area where Yes Bay is located...

The new rules are what is known as a reverse slot limit. Anglers are allowed one fish per day which may be:

1. Under 45 inches ( this is about a 43 pound halibut

or

2. Over 68 inches (this will be about a 163 pounder!)

So the trophy halibut is back!! And even the smaller halibut is a big increase over what was allowed last year! It is a win / win!

So plan on catching some big butts again this year! I know all the guides are looking forward to the challenge!!

The Yes Bay staff is busy getting ready for the show circuit which opens next week in Denver.

2011 New Video for the Lodge!

Mark Titus (Otter) did some filming this summer and added some new footage and re-worked the video. I will have it embedded in the website tomorrow, but figured I would get this up quickly and let everyone see it....I think it is a huge improvement and brings us up to date! There are some new faces and a few strange ones on this video...but the underwater scenes are fabulous!!

Lodge Going ons...End of October 2011

Many people ask every year what goes on at the Lodge during the off-season...well, this year I am going to try and keep up with some of the activities and post some pictures of the daily work and try and keep everyone informed of what is going on at the Lodge and in the office in Ketchikan.

Office in Ketchikan.

1. Busy getting next years reservations in order. Negotiating with our returning guests and groups - bookings look good for next year with 3 returning groups confirmed and 2 more new groups in the works, plus we have 32 reservations in and 161 guests already booked and confirmed for next season.

2. Marketing and email blasts and getting ready for the show season to start in January.

3. Working with Mark Titus on the new video for the Lodge - Look for it on this blog soon and on the web site.

4. Complete rebuild of the web-site is in the works with new design and some great new pictures.

5. Call-outs for 2012 crew - 9 guides returning so only to really look for 3. Some of the other crew will also be returning...

Lodge

1. Winter projects and buttoning up for the winter - there are projects being worked on everyday. Some just general maintenance, others some improvements. Always something to do for sure.
2. Shut down went pretty quickly with all the plumbing drained and electric turned off for most of the Lodge. Water heater for the Lodge was shut down and drained, big generators shut down and annual maintenance done - oil changes etc...Window coverings installed on the big front windows in the Lodge. Dock freezer shut down and all fish processing supplies moved to storage under the lodge.
3. All boats transported to town, hauled out put on racks for storage. Kickers removed, tops removed and motors serviced and water drained for the winter. Batteries removed. Any issues with the boats were identified and will be moved during the winter into the work shop to be repaired.
4. Both planes were buttoned up and pulled out of the water and are on land in storage. Seats removed and engines etc. prepped for cold winter.
5. Kevin and family are living at the Lodge and have their daily chores to keep things tidy around the Lodge. Art is in town working on the maintenance of the vehicles and boats and planes.

But there is also some fun - one thing nice about the fall colder weather the prawns move back into the bay and Kevin and family enjoy pulling shrimp traps and crab traps, the past couple days have been great for some nice shrimp.

And by the way - very windy and cold rain the past few days with sustained winds of over 35 and gusts to 50 - temps in the high 40's and yes there is some snow on the mountain peaks around the Lodge. Winter is arriving. Fortunately the shrimp traps are in the Bay so no need to venture far from the Lodge for stocking up the freezer for nice fresh shrimp for the cold winter months ahead.

2012 is well on it's way to being a banner year for Yes Bay. With 2011 still a vivid memory it is already time to start planning your return to Yes Bay for 2012.

Right now we have 4 groups booked in with confirmed reservations and a number of returning guests booked, so prime spots are filling up fast.

Season 2011 Ends September 22nd!

Yes Bay Lodge closed officially for the end of the 2011 season with our last guests departing on Thursday September 22nd. All crew was gone from the Lodge before noon with severe winds and weather predicted for later in the day it was a good time to go in the calm before the storm.

The last 2 days of fishing was really no fishing due to really high winds and a ton of rain, so the guests decided it was better to hang out around the lodge and do a little hiking up the river.

Season 2012 is in the works with reservations being accepted, the office in Ketchikan is open and ready for planning next season!

September 20th - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

Well this pretty much sums it up...looks like winter is arriving early!

STRONG WIND THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING...
.TONIGHT...WINDY...RAIN...HEAVY AT TIMES. LOWS AROUND 51.
SOUTHEAST WIND 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 40 MPH.
.TUESDAY...RAIN...HEAVY AT TIMES. HIGHS AROUND 56. SOUTHEAST WIND
25 MPH DECREASING TO 15 TO 20 MPH IN THE AFTERNOON.

Weather was too bad in town to fly in, so I took some guests for a thrilling ride into to town to catch their flights...it was a roller coaster for sure! But they made it on time and all was well...

Three boats went out this morning and tried to fish in this terrible weather, they decided a hike up the trail behind the Lodge was a better activity for this afternoon.

Anyway 1 boat caught a nice silver, in that mess out there today!!

OK - Who made the weather Gods mad??? It was a bad day today weather wise with hard driving rain, strong 25 to 35 MPH winds and of course some rough water which made it tough to fish and it got worse as the day went on...most boats not out after lunch and my boat the only one who stayed out for lunch bagged it around 2:00 pm - took our lumps on a real rough ride in and called it a day...but the fish Gods continued to shine on us as there were a nice batch of silvers brought in at lunch time and after.

Weather cooperated today, actually a very nice day, little warmer than yesterday with less rain and some decent silvers showed up...not fast and furious, but way better than it has been for the past couple weeks...bad weather predicted for tonight and tomorrow, so we'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Only three boats fishing today and one boat abstained from pics...

September 16th - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

Weather Gods cooperated again today - nice calm winds for most of the day a little tide chop in the middle of the day and light rain most of the day made it a decent day in SE Alaska...Fish Gods weren't as cooperative, the fish are around but not biting, but if you stick at it long enough you will land some fish, it is just real slow going and can be a long time between legitimate bites, plenty of small shakers to keep you busy and steal bait.

Only a couple pictures today - only had three boats fishing...

Hoping for more silvers to bite tomorrow - but always a good day at Yes Bay!

September 15th - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

Wouldn't you know it...some fish started biting as I drove my best buddy to town to catch a flight back to Florida...

The weather Gods cooperated today with a beautiful sunny and warm day with a slight breeze from the west which made for a little lumpy ride in but calm area to fish for the most part and some fish were biting for those who stuck with it...a couple boats weren't quite as lucky, but at least some fish were caught...the outlook all of a sudden looks much better.

A nice selection of silvers, bright Chum and yes that is a nice King in the middle!

Slice's last guiding day today for the season, with his family and like yesterday they slayed some fish, including a bunch of nice rock fish! They know good eating fish!

September 14th - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

It is definitely a fishing report and NOT a catching report today...it was a slow, very slow salmon bite today...

I was pressed in to service to drive 6 people to the airport this morning so my best friend and customer was relegated to fish with Batman this morning...and they got skunked, as well as all the other boats...but Batman and I decided that it must NOT be the genuine Alaska Fishing Guide - it had to be the boy from Florida that could not attract a fish!! It had to be!!

But Lo and Behold my friend Tommy and I fished in the afternoon and we managed one nice silver that is of the three that were caught today, but the guides worked hard and put together a nice selection of big yellow eyes and some nice rock fish to make the day...

The weather Gods continued to cooperate but on my boat at least the fish gods were not smiling...best friend up from Florida and we caught and released a few fish, but we struck out on any silvers today...hopefully tomorrow will be better.

Fish hit the dock including a huge Sea Bass - Lantern Jaw at 9.1 pounds...and a nice King!

Well the weather Gods continued to cooperate with a beautiful warm and sunny day with light winds, just enough to be comfortable...the fish Gods were kinder with a few nice silvers finally starting to bite...the theory is there is so much fresh water, mixed in with the salt water the fish are confused and it is so murky they are having a hard time seeing...whatever, the water cleared up a little this afternoon and there was actually a "bite" for a short time...

We also had a few surprises with the Bat Boat catching two nice keeper kings and releasing another...

The fishing is coming back, hope the weather holds and we don't get any more rain for a few days and I think it will be back to normal!!

September 9th - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

I have been a little remiss, not really! No fishing report for the past couple days primarily due to some bad weather...after the storm that caused the boat problem, the bad weather continued and not many people were fishing and not many fish were caught, the silver fishing has been slow at best and dead most of the time...today the weather cleared and a big orange thing was in the sky, someone said it was called the sun, but it had been so long most of us didn't know what it was...calm seas and more guests arrived. There was also some "Blue Sky" we wondered what was going on...

A few silvers and some nice rock fish hit the dock from those fishing, but all said it was still pretty slow fishing, hopefully now that we have a weather change for a day or so, the fish will turn on...

September 6th - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

WOW - OK who was supposed to talk to the weather GODS?? Because it didn't go through!!

Strong winds and a ton of rain made today a real tough fishing day...we had a few guests trying to leave and they ended up leaving a little late but we came though and got them out of here, hopefully they were able to make arrangements and get back home at a reasonable hour...but we had our work cut out for us here at the Lodge. Strong winds and a ton of rain had our boats bouncing around at the dock overnight and sadly Batman's boat had a small problem with a little too much water for the weather and was reclaimed by the ocean gods...but the fine crew here at Yes Bay pitched in and got everything sorted out and Batman has switched to a new batboat and is ready to fish again!! The batboat is out of the water and everything is now fine, no problem with both engines and it will be fishing again soon! But until then the Bat Boat designation has been switched to another boat!

Now if the fish would only cooperate...three boats fished both morning and afternoon a few decided to stay in and enjoy the warmth of the Lodge and relax for the day!

September 5th - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

Well the fish gods were better than the weather Gods today but both could still use a little help. Gale predicted for tonight and tomorrow morning so we expect things to be a little rough tomorrow, with calming in the afternoon, we'll see.

Silvers were around today but harder to find...my boat found three nice ones this morning first thing, then only chum later in the day. Several boats brought in some nice silvers and an assortment of chum, some very bright.

September 4th - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

What a difference a day makes - Thanks to all the people who prayed to the weather Gods and the Fish Gods...wind stayed down most of the day and rain was light for most of the day and the fishing was great!!

Lots of new people arrived today - a day late due to bad weather yesterday, rain and fog so we could not fly them in, they came in this morning and hit the water first thing...

Silvers finally were hitting today as well as some very nice Chum salmon! It was a good day and plenty of fish hit the dock with several boats with limits and the rest pretty close...

My great repeat guests and friends had a good day and thank goodness Pam was feeling better and could fish today, otherwise our fish count would have been much different! She outfished Rob by about 2 to one and landed a nice halibut in the afternoon! BTW - Chris there is a nice note for you on the halibut!

September 3rd - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse...guess what, bad weather and mediocre fishing for another day...cold wind and a ton of rain today made fishing a hearty experience, for those who persevered there were some rewards with a few nice silvers hitting the dock and some chums salmon as well a few nice rock fish and halibut.

I have great repeat guests for the next few days, although today I was stuck with the not so better half as the better half was feeling under the weather and stayed in today...we won't talk about the missed fish, but we did release several nice large chum salmon this morning...

Crew fishing - Dewey had a rare day off and went hunting, couldn't find a deer or goat, so he decided the next best thing would be to fish on the way back to the Lodge and managed to land a nice feeder King - 17 plus pounds...

Slammer Dan decided to hit the bottom on his day off and landed all by himself a nice 90 plus pounder...

So there was a great day at Yes Bay in spite of the conditions...

Pray for Silvers soon please!!

Slow fishing and wind and rain - rough water limited where we could fish, although I am not sure that location mattered...the fish all of a sudden have developed Lock Jaw!!

It was a very tough day of fishing today, we put lots of bait in the water and not much at the cleaning station...of course we all say:

That is why they call it fishing and not catching!

But it is a rare event at Yes Bay to have a day this bad...

So please say a prayer to the fish and weather gods for a better tomorrow!!

August 31st - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

A little anxiety this morning for a guest leaving as we had some pretty dense fog early this morning, but the plane overnighted and so only had to water taxi out the Bay to find clearer skies into to town, it was clear there, just fog in and around Yes Bay with a much higher ceiling out front and into town...but foggy morning means calm waters and for the most part a sunny morning after the fog burned off and continuing calm winds all day with no rain...and better fishing, we had to travel a little further but we found some nice silvers and most boats brought some in...

August 30th - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

Some good news, some bad news and some GREAT news...

First the good news - Perfect weather day today with almost no rain and very light winds, nice and calm all day. We had some pretty dense fog around the Lodge this morning, but it cleared later in the morning.

Bad News - Slow salmon day - a long time between a few bites.

The Great News - The Silvers are only about 15 miles away and we should see them very soon...radio was blasting today from some boats close by (within radio range) and they were into silvers big time...so we could see more fish tomorrow and even more in the following days...

Still some real nice fish caught today and a good time was had by all!!

And Thanks to NOAA and our federal government several nice sized halibut were released today...

August 29th - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

Well the weather was rainy today most of the day, although the wind stayed down, it was still a little lumpy out at times, mainly due to the tide, but very fishable and for a change the salmon were biting. Not fast and furious mind you, but if you stuck with it some decent fish were biting. Some very nice sized Chum salmon, some pinks and some nice silvers were mixed in the bunch. My boat even managed to land a sockeye, which is rare when fishing in the open water, since they primarily feed on jellyfish and plankton and not bait, but every once in awhile one will hit. It was a very nice fish...

Another tough day of fishing today with a very slow salmon bite...at least a couple halibut hit the dock and some nice salmon just not many, but we did put a nice King on the dock again today...

You could not have asked for a better weather day - light rain in the morning, some rain fog then it cleared up and the sun was out and it was flat calm....a wonderful day on the water...but SLOW fishing for sure...most boats headed in for lunch with very few salmon and a few rock fish...the afternoon was also slow for salmon but a few were caught, but a ton of rock fish hit the dock and one nice halibut.

August 26th - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

The weather was pretty good today with some light rain and rain fog in the morning and calm winds, the afternoon turned more sunny and dry and very light winds, so it was calm and nice...the fish were a little less cooperative today, salmon bite was slow and spotty and the halibut bite was non-existent....I know because we tried several spots for a few hours and not one halibut bite...got a few nice rock fish, but that was it for bottom fish!

On with the pictures - and there are a bunch today!!

Two of our favorite fisherman were on the Bat Boat this afternoon doing some bottom fishing after the elusive Yellow eye - needless to say Batman put them on the spot and they hooked it and reeled it up from way down there near 500 feet!!

Tough fishing day today - hard rain and wind and rough as a cob in the morning made for tough conditions, several people decided to sit back by the fire and relax, but some boats went out...wind died and rain let up in the afternoon but tougher fishing, the bite was in the morning with the bad weather...

Full house with a bunch of people fishing, rain on and off all day today somewhat hard at times, but for the most part pleasant fishing weather with calm seas and almost no wind. Fishing was pretty good, not fast and furious but fairly steady for those who stuck to it. Some decent sized silvers are hitting the dock, so it is silver time!!

Huge turn-over day today with 18 guests leaving and 21 or so arriving - basically back to a full house...some arrived just after lunch so a few boats fished this afternoon, several guests came in on the later flight and made it before dinner at the normal time.

Pretty much all boats fishing tomorrow...pretty good bite this afternoon, especially when you consider that they only fished at the most 2 hours...

Rain, Rain, Rain and some wind this morning especially so it was a tough day out there fishing today but some persevered and some decent fish hit the dock including a couple kings a few silvers and some nice chum salmon...several over sized halibut were also released today...

Weather coming and today was just the beginning with a bunch of rain and a little wind late in the day, but it was calm for most of the day.

Some real nice fish hit the dock today, including a number of Kings and a big 11 plus pound Silver Salmon and some nice smaller ones, a couple pinks and a few nice bright chum - an assortment of rock fish, flounder, halibut and some yellow eyes rounded out the day.

In addition a couple boats went down to the hatchery to see the bears and had a good time and several people took the afternoon to hike up to the lake behind the Lodge to do some freshwater fishing...busy day at Yes Bay!

Great Day today - first good set of silvers in the boat and several were really nice sized...also some nice bright chums hit the dock, along with some halibut and a few big ones released, a few nice big yellow eyes all in all a good day of fishing.

It was really foggy out this morning with heavy rain fog and of course some rain, but it cleared up pretty good with a slight breeze and a little chop in the fishing areas but not too bad....supposed to be almost the same for tomorrow, we'll see. Hopefully a big batch of silvers will keep coming in from now until the end of the season!!

The weather was much better today with very little rain and the wind managed to calm down for most of the day, although the morning was a little rough.

Fishing was slow in the morning but seemed to pick up a little in the afternoon.

We managed a nice halibut a couple cod and small silver and to end the day a really nice King Salmon!!

Whew - what a day - hard rain and wind most of the day today which limited our fishing spots...only two boats fishing today huge crowd of people arrive tomorrow. The mayhem begins with the Lodge full well into September....

Back to today - in spite of the weather we had good fishing with a bunch of catch and release kings and some nice silvers hitting the dock as well as a few nice bottom fish. Both boats managed to stay out of the wind most of the day, although a lumpy ride home, but manageable.

Rain and more rain and a little cold wind this afternoon, but that didn't deter us from a good day of fishing...only one guest boat fishing today, turn-over day for most guests with 7 departing and several arriving this afternoon, so I had three out today on the big boat and we fished salmon most of the morning and it was slow...we managed one nice silver, very bright, thought it was a king for awhile, then we went hunting for halibut and caught three nice halibut. It got lumpy right about the end of the day for the ride in...and did I mention rain!!

Little bit cooler today and there was a little more wind, overcast with a few showers but no too bad out...fishing continues to be a little slow, but one party opted to hike up the trail behind the Lodge and do some freshwater fishing for a change, they had a great time and managed a few salmon as well. See the pictures.

The other group of people went fishing and managed some nice halibut a couple salmon and some assorted bottom fish and several people headed down to the hatchery at Neets Bay to walk up and see the bears, so not as many actually out fishing today.

WOW - What a change today was....we all knew the weather was going to change and boy did it...rain started last night and continued through most of today, heavy at times. But we didn't expect a huge wind shift and some hard winds this morning which created some real tough fishing...but the Yes Bay Guides prevailed and everyone stuck it out, found a place to hide from most of the wind and managed to get some nice fish to the dock...

Another beautiful day today but the wind came up this afternoon and limited a few of our favorite fishing spots...but for the hardy and diligent soles the fishing was pretty good. Several boats struggled to find the salmon or bottom fish they hoped for but everyone caught some nice fish....

Little rain this evening, looks like we are in for a weather change, we'll see what tomorrow brings...

Another picture post card day today with bright warm sunny skies and very little wind for most of the day...the fishing was pretty darn good in the morning, but the salmon bite slowed way down in the afternoon...stay at it long enough and you were rewarded but it was slow...bottom fishing was pretty good for most boats with good halibut and rock fish....

Beautiful weather day again today....calm all morning periods of bright sunshine then a few clouds and some wind in the afternoon, but not bad. Salmon fishing was NOT fast and furious, but there were fish caught...we managed a few pinks and a nice bright small silver...and some bottom fish. Spent the afternoon chasing bottom fish looking for a yellow eye or a nice halibut...to no avail!

Rain and more rain and the fish were biting pretty good. 4 boats out today plus 2 boats this morning with InnerSeas Discovery people for 1/2 day charters all caught fish, no pics from the InnerSea people today as they can't keep their fish, since they are on a small cruise ship, so no pics for them, but they had a good day and the Bermitz Family is up visiting Snapper Al and daughter Samantha (crew) and they hard targeted halibut today and had a great day of catching, only spent a few minutes on salmon fishing and still managed a nice Chum...the other boats all caught a bunch of salmon and had a good day, in spite of the rain...and it did rain all day, hard late in the afternoon, but light for the majority of the day, but steady..

Two boats out fishing today and the weather could not have been better, blue skies, sunshine and calm winds - flat calm most of the day and warm...

Yesterday was a much needed day off for the crew, no fishing to speak of, it was clean boats, clean and fix equipment and get ready for the next part of the season. We have a short respite from now until about the 10th with limited number of guests, then full blast through silver season with the Lodge basically full until the end...so everyone is enjoying some time off, going to town, getting things squared away...

Today just one boat was out with guests...tomorrow there will be a couple more.

Hard to believe only one more day in July and then August starts...the season is flying by!!

The fish are still out there for sure, the weather remained rainy today but no wind to speak of, so it wasn't bad fishing...

For those that braved the rain and stayed out all day there was plenty of fish around with a good assortment of bottom fish and salmon, a sprinkling of silvers, some nice chum and some pinks all hit the dock today as well as a few halibut.

The first two pictures were all day people, they stuck it out and nailed a nice collection of fish...although the remaining groups did just fine as well, they just came in for lunch and warmed up and dried off for a few minutes...

And a special catch - saw the bite, picked up the rod out of the rod holder, released it from the ball, felt the bite, set the hook and reeled it in all by herself, always a special fish when you do it all yourself!!

Rain and more rain...it rained most of the day today and it was also a little cool, but the wind stayed down all day and the seas were flat, fishing was a little slower for salmon today but for those who stuck with it they brought some nice fish in. The bottom fishing was pretty hot all day, the calm seas made staying on your bottom spot pretty easy and productive.

Big turn-over at the Lodge today with most guests departing this morning and only one boat fishing today...an assortment of guests arrived today so more boats will be fishing tomorrow...

The weather turned a little today with drizzly rain for most of the day and some wind in the morning and this afternoon.

Snowman was the one fishing today and he got on some salmon this morning, but went looking for Kings this afternoon and the bite was not on...

But fish in the box this morning...

While waiting for guests to depart this morning all the guides were on the dock so one of our pilots decided a picture in front of the airplane was in order...so here is our guide staff for 2011 and Kenny our dock man for the season...best we have had in years...

Last day for the big group of people in the Lodge and a fine day it was...fishing was pretty darn good and the weather was perfect, mostly clear skies with bright sunshine, warm temperature and light winds for most of the day...lumpy a couple times during the day but always fishable..

Lots of pics from this group and some award winning fish...the group had a little tournament going, largest King Salmon, Largest other salmon and largest yellow eye snapper and of course it came down to the last day, with all of the leaders losing their spot at today's weigh-in...I'll try to identify the winning fish.

This was a great group of people many had been here before but as always there were several new faces in the group and everyone had a great time and all left with a nice box of fish to remember their stay at Yes Bay, although I am sure it will not be soon forgotten...

You know, I have been to well over 5 county fairs, a gay rights parade and an all black rodeo and I have never seen anything like this...

The weather was perfect today and I would have to say the fishing improved as well, wind laid down for most of the day, little choppy this morning and some light rain, then calm for the middle of the day and the sun came out and it got warm, then a little sea breeze kicked up this afternoon primarily from the warmth of the sun and the tide change...

Some kings were biting this morning, halibut were biting and in the afternoon the chums and pinks were hitting, so it was a great day of fishing...

OK - Here's the scoop...two boats went out yesterday afternoon with newly arrived guests...it was windy, rainy and a little rough out and the fishing matched the weather, both boats trolled for salmon for about 4 hours and got 1 small rock fish, so no pictures from yesterday...wind laid down overnight, today was warm and sunny most of the day with a touch of breeze in the afternoon...fishing started out this morning dead...hardly any fish caught, it seemed to pick up in the afternoon on the tide turn to the incoming and the bite picked up, several real nice bright Kings hit the dock, a good assortment of halibut and several really nice collections of rock fish and some yellow eye...turned out to be a pretty good day, some chum and a few pinks and one really nice silver as well as the kings...

For those of you following daily, you may have wondered what happened, well quite frankly nothing...the Lodge had the past two days without guests, so crew took a break, time to wash the boats, fix the tackle, several headed to town, clean up the Lodge and enjoy the quiet...today that all changed the Lodge went from no guests last night to full tonight, so it will be a big day of fishing tomorrow, with ALL boats going out...so look for plenty of pictures tomorrow...

Crew enjoyed the break...I managed to take a few pictures and get some office work finished, trip to town...I am ready to fish tomorrow!!

Not many fishing today, but the fishing was still pretty good. The Lodge pretty much emptied out with a big change-over and a full house arriving day after tomorrow, so we are in gear up and get ready mode...

Kicker and guests went out today for the day and Slice and Snapper Al, went out for a couple hours and whacked a nice halibut....

Weather turned today, sunshine and blue skies left us and it was an overcast drizzly type day with a little bit of wind, but not too rough and of course it was a touch cooler but not bad at all...fishing stayed pretty good although a little bit slower than the previous days...stick with it and you will get some fish....

As always, the pictures tell the story...

I had a three people from the InnerSeas Discovery cruise ship for a half day charter and we managed a couple nice pinks and released a barely undersized King along with several sharks...not a hot morning of fishing but a fun time was had by all...

Sunny weather again today although with a nice breeze, which kept it a little cooler, but that also made it a little bit rougher out fishing, so it was a touch lumpier out there, but the fish were biting at least the pictures seem to prove that...

Fishing was a little tough with the high pressure and bright skies, but plenty of fish hit the dock even a few surprising Kings in several different locations, always a mystery where you will find them...

Today the fishing was a little slower and a little more work, but those who persevered were rewarded with some nice catches, including a few of the remaining Kings around. The real treat of the day was by far the best weather we have had this season, it was downright hot today for us Alaska people...but it was bright sunny blue skies and calm winds, in fact at times no wind, the seas were glassy for the majority of the day.

It was a beautiful summer day at Yes Bay!! Here are the pictures for today, only a few boats fished we are in a little lull between large groups of guests, the Lodge will be full again in a day or two...

Our large group left today after lunch so it was a short morning fish for most of the guests and guides, but the fish kept coming in, weather stayed nice with some sunshine this morning and warmer temperatures and almost no wind...the fish cooperated as well.

Big fishing day today with almost all boats fishing, tomorrow all boats will be fishing with the arrival of a few more guests this afternoon...the Lodge is FULL!

Lots of pictures and lots of fish, the Kings were a little harder to find, but a few were caught, but plenty of nice bright pinks, some good sized ones to and throw in a few nice big Chums and a couple silvers and it was a salmon day. A couple halibut also hit the dock, so all in all a great day...

Big turn-over day at the Lodge with most guests checking out today, one group left in the morning and another group left right after lunch, so we had several boats fishing this morning and only one guest boat this afternoon...and Kicker out with his guests all day, but that will change tomorrow as we had a group of 15 arrive this afternoon.

Anyway, decent day of fishing here are the pictures...

July 4th Fireworks at Yes Bay Lodge

Our annual fireworks display went off without a hitch last night...as usual it was a fantastic display. The evening starts out with a wonderful BBQ Buffet for our guests and crew, with BBQ Ribs and Chicken and all the trimmings, perfect for our Independence Day Celebration, then after dinner the guests wait with anticipation for the Fireworks Show which begins as the evening ends and a little darkness falls.

I make plans every year to do my best to capture the beautiful fireworks and this year the rain eased up a little and our guests retired to the front deck to watch the show, here is just some of what they got to see. The show lasted non-stop well over 30 minutes...one of the better private Fireworks displays in SE Alaska, for sure!

July 4th weekend is a perfect time to visit Yes Bay Lodge with good fishing and a true celebration of our Independence...God Bless America.

Weather was a little better today, less wind, a little less rain, but the air still had a pretty good chill to it...it didn't dampen the spirits of our hearty guests who braved the wind and rain and cold an managed some nice catches today, sveral nice big kings a few chum a couple silvers and an assortment of pinks...even a halibut and some rock fish hit the dock today...all around good fishing day!!

Now everyone is waiting for the fireworks to begin when it gets a little darker...

Rain, Rain and more rain was the order of the day for today, oh and I forgot to add a couple more things, wind and cold and one more thing a steady King bite...most boats were into Kings this afternoon for sure and a few in the morning...also several boats found some nice pinks and a couple chums, but halibut were pretty hard to come by, with several boats trying and none really succeeding...

Lots of pics today and some really nice kings for one group (family) fishing in three boats they had a great King Day!! Worthy of my camera...this will be used down the road in our booth and in some literature I am sure...

July 2nd - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

Rain continued and it was still a little bit cool, but the wind managed to stay down and the fishing was good...some nice decent sized Kings hit the dock, with a few pinks and a couple chum and some assorted rock fish and a couple decent halibut. Also Slammer's guests reeled in a very nice 15 pound Yellow Eye Snapper...beautiful fish!

Lots of boats out today so quite a few pictures, busy July 4th weekend! Stay tuned for our own Yes Bay Fireworks show on the 4th - pics to come! Fireworks arrived today!

July 1st - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

Turn-over day at the Lodge today with many of our guests leaving and more arriving this evening so it was a two boat day out fishing today. The weather caused a delay in getting started this morning with both boats getting away from the dock a few minutes later than normal, it was pretty chilly and windy with plenty of rain and the guests had to make sure they finished their hot breakfast before heading down to the dock, but once down the fishing and catching was on.

Both boats were able to fish away from the wind and seas but still had to deal with the chilly morning and rain, but it did not seem to matter much as the fish could not feel the cold, until they felt the cold steel of the hooks which were presented...

A good day of catching for both boats with a limit of Kings on both boats and some nice sized ones as well, with most over 20 pounds....add in an assortment of a few pinks and it was a good day of fishing...

Oh and Slammer said he didn't sleep all day yesterday, he was at the dock for fish cleaning at Lunch and before dinner...and cleaned up his tackle box...

Last night he was up late playing Backgammon and ended up with a black eye, good story...seems the game fell off a shelf above his bed and hit him in the head as he was trying to sleep...so I guess he wasn't really "playing" backgammon...it was playing with him, he just didn't know it. Another Alaska fact that is probably not really a need to know...

June 30th - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

The end of June finished with a little cold snap and some rain, most of the day. A few bailed out after the cold morning, although it did seem to warm a little in the afternoon...change-over day tomorrow with several boat loads finishing their stay at Yes Bay today...

But the pictures will tell the story with several nice Kings hitting the dock and a few nice bright pinks and a couple nice sized Chum, plus a couple nice halibut and a rock fish or two...

July promises to be just as good if not better than June, we caught quite a few nice big Kings and there are still some out there to catch, add in the nice pinks and chum that are arriving and there should be plenty of good fishing left this season...

Oh and an update - Slammer took today off and slept most of the day, didn't do a lick of work!!

One of those days - rain all day and good fishing, most boats finished their King fishing pretty early and it was a good thing as the weather and wind picked up in the afternoon, oh and rain, lots of it...several halibut also hit the dock as well as an assortment of salmon, Kings, Chum and pinks...a few yellow Eye Snapper and some nice rockfish filled out the day...

June 28th - Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

Today was NOT a repeat of yesterday - the weather turned a little colder, overcast and rain almost all day....the fishing was not as fast a furious...the Kings were there but not feeding like yesterday, if you persevered you were rewarded with some nice Kings many caught were just legal although a couple bigger fish were caught as well. The wind decided to pick up out front so the fishing on the main for halibut was a rough go, so most boats just stayed and fished for Kings many took all day to get one or their limit...

We all hope for a little less wind tomorrow so we might have some more options and of course we are hoping for a stronger morning bite. Clear skies last night we think the fish fed all night...there is a ton of bait around, so food is plentiful, which is a good thing...

June 26th - No fishing - I did not forget, we had a Lodge turn-over day and only had one boat out for trophy Kings, they released 6 but didn't keep any, so no pictures or fishing report.

Today was an amazing day - started off fogged in and we knew it was going to be a sunshine and blue sky day and warm...It was in the 70's today add the good weather to some fantastic King fishing and it is a day to remember. Almost all the boats fished today only 3 stayed in, but they will be out tomorrow and the Lodge is full tonight. Large group arrived yesterday and they were not disappointed. Plenty of Kings, the halibut were a little scarce, but the Kings were active and almost every boat got their limit...

The group had a fantastic time, not everyone caught a bunch of fish everyday, but everyone caught fish and some hiked up the stream and did some fresh water fishing and some took some side boat tours to see area waterfalls and other scenic wonders...plus each person in the group is taking home a real nice box of fish...

We certainly hope to see them all back again next year, this is a fun group of great people and we enjoy their visit every year.

King Day today - there were plenty of Kings around today and this group put a hurting on them, with most every boat getting their limit and to top it all the end of the day produced the biggest King of the day at just over 39 pounds, with a bunch in the 25 pound plus range...lots of good fishing including a good assortment of halibut with several large ones released and a huge assortment of rock fish including some real nice Yellow Eyes and even a nice Ling Cod...just about every species had an assortment of sizes to choose from. We even landed a nice bright pink salmon today, so that makes All catch-able species to have hit the dock this year already...King, Chum, 1 silver and 1 pink...

Rained most of the day today, but the wind cooperated and it wasn't too bad out there today...spotty fishing but some nice fish came to the dock...Lodge is full so all boats fishing, some stayed out all day but a few came in for lunch and couple people didn't make the afternoon outing, seems there was some alcohol in abundance last night, should be a little quieter tonight!!

June 22nd, 2011 Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

Today things slowed down around the lodge with it being a turn-over day. Only three boats fished with guests and they had a good day of fishing with several getting limits. Large group arrived tonight so the Lodge is FULL for the first time this season and will stay nearly full for the next several weeks. Everyone is looking forward to some great fishing. Kings are still around and some nice bright Chum have moved into Neets Bay, several netters were down there today and plenty of commercial trollers as well as the processing barge so salmon season is now in full swing.

The forecast calls for a record run of pinks and chum this season and we have already landed some really nice big Kings with more to come....

Fine day today with some nice surprises...a couple worthy notes.

1. First Pink Salmon hit the dock
2. Multiple Chum salmon as well and some nice ones
3 Slammer's boat nailed a 41.4 pound King in the drift...

A good assortment of halibut also hit the dock with a few big ones released...it wore out a few of the fisherman, one released over a 100 pounds and another 60 plus pounder on the same boat....

Today was a decent day at Yes Bay - The weather cooperated with little wind and calm seas for the most part and of course some rain, but not a hard rain. The fishing continues to be a little spotty for kings, but the halibut were biting pretty good and a few boats picked up some nice Kings...had 2 over 27 pounds so that is a good day!!

Today was better for my boat at least, but still spotty fishing although there are kings out there and if you get the bait in front of them they will bite, it just takes time and patience and lots of trolling to get the bait in front of a fish...after all it is fishing and with the beautiful scenery we have and today is was flat calm and very nice so the conditions were perfect and a few kings were caught a couple halibut and an assortment of rock fish...so there are pictures, in no particular order, although most every one had guests today we had some nice walk-ins from some visiting yachts...

First our gardeners from Ketchikan came out to plant some wonderful flowers and some herbs in the greenhouse and get the flower pots going for the deck...then went fishing!! Who can blame them....

The one of the visiting yacht people aboard the Changes in Latitude landed a nice halibut and promise to feed the rest of the flotilla, since they didn't fare quite as well...this is the Fitzsimmons party with guide Jeff Bortz...

And now, yes everyone was surprised after my last two days of being skunked, but the O'Connell party managed a nice King today weighing about 18 pounds or so...

The afternoon we didn't fare as well, but I forced Heidi to get her picture taken with her rock fish...(I'll do almost anything to get my picture taken with a pretty lady!!) We did manage to release a couple nice bright shakers (undersized Kings)...so it wasn't a total loss in the afternoon...

The Richens party had a good day with Captain Sean Falconer...

Nice King...27.9 pounds!!

Another fine day of fishing, catching and relaxing at beautiful Yes Bay Lodge in SE Alaska!!

June 17th Yes Bay Lodge Fishing Report

It got better today for everyone but my boat....I have been snakebit...longest dry spell in my Yes Bay history...but we'll fix that tomorrow. I am going to remain positive!!

Still spotty and a little slow, but there are still big fish around as our biggest of the year hit the dock today from Slammers boat...an beautiful 43 pounder, 43.4 pounds to be exact!! Several other nice kings hit the dock today, and a few rock fish, several boats pounded bottom for some halibut but to no avail...Batmans boat also landed a nice one this morning that was 24.5 pounds a real nice fish that I witnessed being caught and it made a really long run!! Big fighter!
